The Congress party in Madhya Pradesh has announced a major agitation scheduled for May 7 to address farmers’ concerns. This protest, termed “Road Satyagraha,” will involve blocking national highways at seven locations across the state. Former Minister P.C. Sharma will lead the agitation, with State Congress President Jitu Patwari also actively participating.
The party’s objective is to peacefully convey farmers’ grievances to the government. Patwari emphasized that the Congress will block the Mumbai–Agra National Highway as part of their demonstration. In response, state BJP president Hemant Khandelwal criticized the Congress, questioning their credibility on wheat procurement issues.
Khandelwal highlighted alleged failures of the previous Congress government, challenging their record on wheat procurement before 2004. He demanded an apology from Congress for past incidents and accused them of neglecting farmers. The Congress anticipates disrupting traffic over 747 kilometers in 11 districts with their upcoming agitation.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav provided updates on wheat procurement, stating that 4.1 million metric tons have been procured in Madhya Pradesh. He assured farmers of timely payments and encouraged them to book slots efficiently. The Congress reiterated their stance, emphasizing that the protest aims to safeguard farmers’ rights and address systemic failures in agricultural policies.
