The Congress party has requested the Tripura government to spare teachers from government schools from participating in the upcoming census. They propose involving contractual staff instead due to a significant shortage of teachers affecting academic activities. The state is facing a scarcity of around 18,000 teaching positions across different education levels, with over 400 government schools operating with just one teacher, as per a NITI Aayog report.
The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee President, Asish Kumar Saha, highlighted the challenges faced by government schools despite the state’s emphasis on enhancing education quality. Many schools, especially in remote and tribal areas, have shut down due to various reasons. Saha emphasized that the lack of teaching and non-teaching staff has hampered academic operations, leading to a decline in educational standards. Despite the teacher shortage, the government plans to introduce pre-primary and nursery sections in 450 schools.
The Congress leader stressed the need to relieve approximately 9,000 government school teachers from census-related duties to prevent disruption in academic activities. Saha emphasized that teachers should primarily focus on educational responsibilities rather than administrative tasks like census duties and election-related work. He urged the government to conduct transparent recruitment drives to fill the vacant teaching positions promptly and address the critical teacher shortage in government schools.
