The Congress in Gujarat raised concerns about a severe water scarcity situation in parts of the state, particularly in Saurashtra, Kutch, and North Gujarat. Major dams in these regions are currently at only 20% of their total water storage capacity. The party highlighted that the acute rainfall deficit, with only 1 inch of rainfall in June compared to 11.55 inches last year, has led to a significant decline in sowing and agricultural activities.
The declining water levels in dams have resulted in crop drying, reduced cultivation, and distress among farmers. The situation is becoming critical, especially with the looming threat of a drinking water crisis if the monsoon continues to be delayed. Livestock owners are facing fodder scarcity, compelling them to travel long distances in search of feed.
The Congress emphasized the need for immediate water supply to irrigation canals to safeguard standing crops. They also called for an increase in electricity supply for agriculture from the current eight hours to at least 12 hours daily to support effective tubewell operations. Urging the state government to assess damages promptly, the party demanded immediate relief measures for farmers and livestock rearers, along with long-term solutions.
