Hundreds of Congress workers and laborers in Punjab gathered outside the Vidhan Sabha in Chandigarh on International Labour Day, advocating for a minimum daily wage of Rs 750. Led by state Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, the demonstration coincided with a special session called by the Aam Aadmi Party government. Warring criticized the government for not addressing laborers’ welfare issues over the past four years and accused the special session of being a mere show.
The protesters demanded that the minimum daily wage be increased to Rs 750 and proposed monthly wages ranging from Rs 15,000 to Rs 22,000 based on skill levels. Warring accused the Aam Aadmi Party of using the Assembly session as a distraction tactic and emphasized that the government’s time was running out as elections approached. He assured that if Congress came to power, they would prioritize laborers’ welfare and consider their demands seriously.
Warring highlighted Congress’s historical support for laborers, mentioning the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act as an example of their commitment to the working class. He pledged that under a Congress government, a minimum daily wage of Rs 750 would be guaranteed for laborers, along with a compassionate approach to other demands.
