A controversy has emerged at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital regarding claims of ragging of first-year students by seniors in one of its hostels. Second-year students are accused of harassing newcomers under the guise of “introductions,” as per sources from the medical college. The college authorities are actively monitoring the situation.
The institution has faced public scrutiny since the 2024 rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor within the campus, leading to the conviction of civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy, who is currently serving a life sentence in a correctional home. Recent complaints of ragging have surfaced from Maniktala Hostel, designated exclusively for first-year students, where alleged rule violations have allowed some second-year students to stay.
Reports suggest that first-year students experienced various forms of harassment and threats, including insults and attempted physical assaults during so-called introduction sessions by second-year students. The situation escalated when the affected students sought help from college authorities, resulting in an alleged attack by the accused second-year students on the complainants.
Following the complaints, the college authorities reportedly warned the accused second-year students. However, tensions persisted, leading to a confrontation between first- and second-year students on a road, where further threats were purportedly made to the juniors. The complainants later submitted a detailed written report of the incident to the authorities for action.
As of now, the college administration has not released an official statement on the issue. A senior source from the medical college mentioned that the allegations are under investigation, and steps might be taken to eradicate any culture of intimidation or threats within the institution.
