The Wrestling Federation of India’s Asian Games 2026 Trials faced controversy when Meenakshi Goyat, who defeated Vinesh Phogat to reach the semifinals, raised concerns over her loss to Antim Panghal in the women’s 53 kg final at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi. Following her defeat, Meenakshi filed a complaint regarding the officiating in the final to Antim. Despite acknowledging the complaint, the WFI confirmed that Antim would represent India in the 53kg category at the upcoming Asian Games in Japan.
Wrestler Vinesh Phogat, a two-time World Championship medallist, faced hurdles during the trials. Initially barred from participating, Vinesh eventually got clearance after legal interventions. However, she was allowed to compete in the 53kg category instead of her preferred 57kg. Despite winning her quarterfinal bout narrowly, Vinesh expressed dissatisfaction with the referee’s decisions and accused the federation of hindering her qualification.
Vinesh’s husband and coach, Somvir Rathee, expressed disappointment over the situation, stating that they felt cheated and believed that the federation did not support Vinesh’s success. Despite the challenges, he emphasized Vinesh’s determination to bounce back, return to training, and showcase her skills through her performances.
