Harold Rogers, acting CEO of Coupang, underwent a 14-hour police interrogation in South Korea after facing allegations of perjury during his testimony before the South Korean parliament. The accusations stem from his statements made during a parliamentary hearing regarding Coupang’s significant data breach affecting over 33 million customers in the country. Rogers allegedly provided false information under oath, leading to the police questioning.
During the hearing, Rogers claimed that Coupang had conducted an internal investigation into a Chinese individual suspected of involvement in the data breach. He stated that the National Intelligence Service, South Korea’s spy agency, directed the company to seize the suspect’s laptop. Following the questioning, Rogers left the Seoul police investigative headquarters without addressing reporters’ inquiries.
The police, focusing on the data breach case disclosed by Coupang in November, are likely to subject Rogers to further interrogation. Additionally, authorities are investigating potential attempts to conceal information related to the death of a Coupang employee at a logistics center in 2020. Rogers is anticipated to depart South Korea later this month to provide testimony before the U.S. House Committee on the Judiciary, which is probing alleged discriminatory actions against American companies by South Korea.
