The CPI and CPI(M) have decided not to attend the meeting-cum-feast organized by Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) founder and Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, despite receiving invitations. This choice is in line with the Left parties’ stance of providing external support to the TVK-led government rather than being formal coalition members. The Left leaders emphasized that participating in the event could give the impression of their formal inclusion in the alliance.
Party officials clarified that the feast was exclusively for the government’s allies, and as they are extending support from outside, they opted out to maintain their distinct political identity. CPI State Secretary M. Veerapandian highlighted that the Left parties are not currently part of any alliance but will continue supporting the government while upholding their independent position. He mentioned that their decision not to participate in the event does not signify discord with the government but reinforces their commitment to collaborating on issues affecting various societal segments.
The CPI and CPI(M) have been backing the TVK government on significant matters since its inception, emphasizing that their support is issue-based and in the public interest rather than a formal political pact. Despite their absence at the feast, the parties affirmed their ongoing cooperation with the government on concerns related to workers, farmers, and marginalized groups. Additionally, they reiterated their intent to raise public interest issues with the government as needed.
While refraining from the alliance event, leaders of the CPI and CPI(M) are scheduled to meet Chief Minister Vijay at the Secretariat later in the day. During this meeting, they plan to present a memorandum addressing critical issues concerning workers and other societal segments, seeking the government’s attention. This move underscores the Left parties’ endeavor to balance their support for the TVK government with their aspiration for political autonomy.
