Stunned by its worst-ever electoral defeat in Kerala, the CPI-M is undergoing a period of deep reflection. The loss not only ended a decade of Left rule in the state but also marked the absence of a Left government in India for the first time in nearly six decades. The defeat has sparked internal criticism, especially towards Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and state Secretary M. V. Govindan.
The expulsion of four veteran party leaders who then contested with UDF support, winning in Left strongholds, dealt a severe blow to the CPI-M. V. Kunjikrishnan, one of the expelled leaders, warned that without serious introspection, the party could face a fate similar to what occurred in West Bengal. The defeat saw 50 sitting Left legislators losing their seats, including 13 cabinet members of Vijayan, while all 32 UDF legislators who contested emerged victorious.
The CPI-M, which held 62 seats in 2021, now only has 26 seats, leading to calls for accountability and leadership changes. Dissent within the party has spilled onto social media platforms, with criticisms ranging from candidate selection to the sidelining of mass leaders. The erosion of traditional strongholds, combined with a consolidation of minority votes against the Left, has raised concerns about a structural decline.
Allies have also criticized the CPI-M, with the CPI’s mouthpiece ‘Janayugom’ attributing the defeat to governance failures and a growing disconnect with the people. Another editorial highlighted the public backlash against arrogance and a departure from core secular positions. Senior leader Jayarajan emphasized the need for the party to address organizational distortions and leadership lapses to regain public trust.
The CPI-M faces an ideological challenge amidst incremental gains by the BJP in Kerala and a broader rightward shift in national politics. The party sees this as a call to strengthen its resistance while dealing with internal dissent. The party’s immediate focus is not just on electoral recovery but on rebuilding credibility within its ranks and among voters. The upcoming meeting of the CPI-M leadership will be crucial in assessing the situation and planning the way forward.
