In a self-critical analysis by CPI-M Central Committee member K.K. Shailaja, she termed the party’s loss in the Kerala Assembly elections as a significant setback. Shailaja emphasized the need for the Left to address emerging organizational and political hurdles highlighted by the defeat.
Shailaja, in an article titled ‘A Comeback is Inevitable’ published in the CPI-M’s journal ‘Chintha,’ stressed that the recent electoral defeat was not ordinary, especially as the Left faced setbacks in its traditional strongholds. She called for a thorough evaluation of the past three election losses and prompt corrective actions.
The former state minister pointed out the necessity of resolving issues that led to the defeats, urging introspection into the conduct, language, and lifestyle of party members. Shailaja highlighted the decline in seats from 99 to 35 for the LDF in the Assembly elections as a significant red flag.
Shailaja also raised concerns over the BJP’s success in securing three seats in Kerala, emphasizing the need for the Left to address the erosion of votes in its strongholds. She underlined the importance of reconnecting with traditional supporters who may have shifted allegiances due to various reasons.
Highlighting a disconnect with the younger generation, Shailaja noted the party’s failure to effectively communicate its achievements and political journey to new voters. She stressed the importance of adapting to modern media and engaging with youth in a language they understand to regain support.
