The CPI-M Politburo has decided against an immediate leadership change in Kerala following the party’s significant loss in the Assembly elections. The defeat was attributed to flawed candidate selection, organizational weaknesses, and a failure to understand public sentiment. Instead of replacing the leadership, the party plans to implement a thorough rectification process, with a detailed review scheduled for the upcoming Central Committee meeting in July.
The Politburo endorsed a rectification document that includes suggested changes for the party’s organizational restructuring. The document highlights concerns about some leaders’ focus on parliamentary roles and electoral positions, emphasizing the need to address such trends within the party. Senior leaders referenced instances of party veterans contesting elections outside the CPI-M-led Left Democratic Front during discussions.
Notably, the Politburo observed that the party leadership in Kerala overlooked the prevailing anti-incumbency sentiment and public dissatisfaction with both the government and the party. It also noted a growing disconnect between the party and the grassroots, with local organizational structures weakening significantly. The central leadership pointed out that candidate selection without considering local political dynamics and sentiments had a substantial impact on the party’s performance.
Furthermore, the Politburo directed the Kerala unit to prioritize revitalizing grassroots organizational activities, reconnecting with people’s concerns, and addressing discontent among party members and supporters. It highlighted the importance of acknowledging administrative shortcomings and controversies surrounding cooperative banks to restore the party’s credibility. While criticisms were raised regarding the functioning of the previous Pinarayi Vijayan government, bureaucratic influence, and certain individuals’ roles in the electoral defeat, the Politburo refrained from discussing leadership changes.
The focus now shifts to organizational reconstruction and constructive opposition roles for the Kerala unit, as emphasized by General Secretary M.A. Baby. The revised document will undergo detailed deliberations by the Central Committee in the near future.
