The Communist Party of India-Maxist-Leninist-Liberation (CPI-ML) refuted claims of cross-voting during the Jharkhand Rajya Sabha elections. The controversy arose when the Jharkhand Congress accused its allies, RJD and CPI-ML, of contributing to the defeat of their candidate, Pranav Jha. CPI-ML General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya clarified that their two MLAs had indeed supported the Congress nominee as planned.
The outcome of the Rajya Sabha elections in Jharkhand has sparked a political debate, hinting at possible cross-voting within the ruling INDIA bloc. While JMM candidate Baijnath Ram secured a comfortable victory with 31 votes, Congress nominee Jha received only 20 votes. NDA-backed Independent candidate Parimal Nathwani emerged victorious with 30 votes, despite two of his votes being declared invalid.
The result has raised concerns within the INDIA bloc, which holds a significant majority in the Assembly. With the NDA having fewer legislators, the INDIA bloc was expected to secure both seats easily. However, the unexpected voting pattern suggests that a few members may have deviated from the party line, leading to questions about alliance unity and voting strategies.
The Congress has shifted its focus to its allies, questioning whether all members followed the agreed-upon voting plan. The CPI-ML’s firm denial has added complexity to identifying the source of the alleged cross-voting. This election outcome is seen as a setback for the Congress and has exposed internal divisions within the INDIA bloc in Jharkhand.
Accusations and counter-accusations following the Rajya Sabha poll are likely to prompt further discussions within the opposition alliance on coordination and trust issues.
