CPI(M) candidate and State Tourism Minister, P.A. Mohamed Riyas, who is also the son-in-law of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, plans to file a complaint with the Election Commission against UDF nominee P.V. Anvar in Beypore. The complaint accuses Anvar of engaging in character assassination by repeatedly targeting Riyas and Vijayan’s family with accusations of “nepotism” and “Pinarayism,” which are deemed as personal attacks breaching the Model Code of Conduct.
Anvar has framed his campaign as a crusade against “Pinarayism” and “nepotism,” intensifying the rhetoric in what was traditionally considered a secure Left stronghold. Beypore, situated along Kerala’s renowned maritime belt, has a rich history influenced by trade, craftsmanship, and labor, symbolizing unity and discipline.
Known for its shipbuilding yards and skilled labor groups like the kalasis, Beypore has embodied collective strength and orderliness, reflecting its strong Left-leaning political stance. However, the equilibrium is now disrupted by the political rise of Riyas and the resurgence of Anvar, a former Left-backed Independent MLA who has realigned with the UDF to challenge the Chief Minister’s political ideology.
With the electoral battle escalating from verbal clashes to formal complaints, Beypore, once characterized by its political stability and disciplined nature, is experiencing a shift in dynamics. The outcome of this contest will determine whether Beypore’s tradition of unity, akin to that of its labor groups, remains steadfast or succumbs to change in the upcoming days.
Kerala is scheduled to hold elections on April 9 to elect 140 new legislators, with the results set to be announced on May 4.
