Football exemplifies teamwork, emphasizing trust and shared goals over individual brilliance. CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby likened the party’s functioning to a team sport during a recent meeting, stressing collective progress. The party faces scrutiny over adhering to its collective principles amidst questions about accommodating a specific leader.

The party’s informal age norm of 75 for key roles has been relaxed for Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan, aged 82. Despite calls for change after electoral setbacks, Vijayan retains his position to maintain organizational stability. This decision, while strategic, raises concerns about consistency and collective discipline within the CPI(M).

Criticism within the Central Committee points to issues like arrogance and poor communication affecting the party’s functioning. The party’s introspection coincides with debates on maintaining collective principles and avoiding over-centralized leadership. The challenge for CPI(M) lies in reconciling its ethos of collective discipline with the treatment of its prominent leader.
