CPIM leader Meenakshi Mukherjee has approached the Calcutta High Court following an incident where her car was pelted with eggs while visiting a deceased party worker’s family in Sitalkuchi, Cooch Behar district. Her lawyer informed Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya about the attack, emphasizing the need to prevent such incidents in the future. The court has permitted her to file a case, which will proceed according to legal procedures.
On the day of the incident, eggs were thrown at Meenakshi Mukherjee’s vehicle as she was returning from Sitalkuchi after meeting the bereaved family. The CPIM member was accompanied by former party MP Alokesh Das during the attack. The CPIM alleges that the family of the deceased party worker, Montu Mia, suspected foul play in his death, leading to tensions with the police over the handling of the case.
Meenakshi Mukherjee plans to protest against the attacks and the alleged inaction regarding the death of a Sitalkuchi resident working in Mumbai. She expressed her intention to stage a demonstration at the District Magistrate’s office in response to these incidents. The CPIM leader accused BJP workers of orchestrating the egg attack and criticized the police for failing to take swift action in apprehending the perpetrators.
The BJP’s Cooch Behar district president, Abhijit Barman, denied the party’s involvement in the incident, attributing it to public discontent. He refuted claims of BJP’s role in the attack, stating that the party does not endorse such actions. Barman criticized CPIM for attributing blame to BJP for every adverse event, emphasizing that the party does not condone violence.
