A crude bomb and a threatening letter were discovered outside the residence of a BJP leader in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district. The incident, which took place in Shasina village under Basirhat police station limits, caused panic in the area. The bombs were left at the entrance of the BJP booth president Anil Baran Mallick’s house during the night by unidentified miscreants.
The discovery of the explosives by Mallick in the morning led to tension in the village, prompting villagers to inform the police. Police, accompanied by central forces, quickly responded to the scene and safely removed the bombs. Additionally, a threatening letter and bottles tied to the balcony grille were found, hinting at previous intimidation attempts against the BJP leader.
Anil Baran Mallick, who has been associated with the BJP for nearly two decades, expressed concerns over the incident. He suggested that political rivalry might be the motive behind the attack, although he refrained from directly accusing anyone. Mallick highlighted his long-standing role as the BJP booth president as a possible reason for the animosity.
Local BJP workers condemned the incident and called for increased security measures to safeguard Mallick. They pointed out the fear prevailing among residents due to such threats. Authorities have registered a case based on a formal complaint and initiated an investigation into the matter. To reassure public safety, additional security measures have been implemented in the area, including regular patrols.
Bhaskar Chowdhury, another local BJP worker, strongly criticized the incident, attributing it to the Trinamool Congress’s displeasure over the BJP’s electoral success in the region. Police are actively interrogating locals to trace the source of the bombs and identify the individuals involved in the nighttime intrusion. The administration has assured that those responsible for the threatening act will face legal consequences.
