Filmmaker Darren Aronofsky will be honored at the Locarno Film Festival with the Honorary Leopard Award. The festival, known for showcasing independent cinema, will pay tribute to the American director on August 14 at the 8,000-seat Piazza Grande. Aronofsky will also screen his movies ‘The Fountain’ and ‘Mother’ and engage in a live public discussion.
The festival praised Aronofsky for his impactful films like ‘Pi’, ‘Requiem for a Dream’, ‘The Wrestler’, ‘Black Swan’, ‘Noah’, and ‘The Whale’. They described his work as defying easy categorization, exploring themes of faith, desire, and obsession for over 25 years. Aronofsky’s latest project, the black comedy ‘Caught Stealing’ featuring Austin Butler, was highlighted by ‘Variety’.
In addition to his film endeavors, Aronofsky recently produced ‘On This Day… 1776’, an animated series using artificial intelligence to revisit America’s founding year. Locarno’s artistic director, Giona A. Nazzaro, commended Aronofsky for his creativity, boldness, and unique style. Nazzaro noted that the term ‘Aronofskian’ now signifies a distinct and unconventional filmmaking approach that spans various genres.
