Former Australia head coach Darren Lehmann has expressed his support for compatriot Justin Langer to become England’s men’s Test head coach. The position became available after Brendon McCullum was removed from the role. Andy Flower, a former England coach, has declined to return due to commitments with IPL’s Royal Challengers Bengaluru and The Hundred’s London Spirit.
Langer, who succeeded Lehmann as the Australian coach in 2018, is seen as a leading candidate for the job. Lehmann, currently coaching Northamptonshire in England, believes that the ECB may have already chosen a replacement. He mentioned that if someone is removed mid-season, a successor is likely already selected.
Lehmann praised Langer’s coaching abilities, stating that he would be an excellent choice for the role. Despite Langer’s success with Australia, including retaining the Ashes in England and a 4-0 home series win, he resigned in February 2022 amid reported conflicts with senior players. If Langer takes the England coaching job, he will need to give up his coaching roles with IPL’s Lucknow Super Giants and The Hundred’s Manchester Super Giants.
