A 65-year-old man named Bhimrao Kamble was sentenced to death by a sessions court in Maharashtra for raping and murdering a three-year-old girl in Pune’s Nasrapur. The court judge, S.R. Salunkhe, handed down the capital punishment to Kamble. The prosecution referred to 12 key Supreme Court judgments, labeling this case as one of the “rarest of rare” instances.
In light of the heinous nature of the crime and the lack of remorse shown by the accused, the judge emphasized that Kamble did not merit any leniency. The severity of the injuries on the victim’s body was highlighted as evidence of the brutality involved. The court also took into consideration Kamble’s prior involvement in a sexual assault case, noting his familiarity with the law and his unrepentant demeanor during the trial.
The verdict was swiftly delivered within two months of the May 1 incident, with the police filing the charge sheet just 15 days after the crime. The final arguments concluded on June 21 after charges were framed on May 28. The tragic incident, which shocked the Bhor Taluka region of Pune, involved Kamble sexually assaulting and brutally murdering the young girl by crushing her with a stone.
