The death toll has reached 14 following a Houthi assault on Yemeni government forces in Hodeidah’s Red Sea province. The attack, which targeted two barracks of the 2nd Zaraniq Brigade on the Hays frontline, led to intense clashes between the two sides. Despite briefly seizing control of the barracks, the Houthis were later repelled by government forces after hours of fighting.
A medical official at a local hospital confirmed the death toll increase, with several wounded soldiers in critical condition. The recent escalation in violence by the Houthis includes military and tribal mobilization in areas under their control, with renewed calls to end the perceived Saudi-led blockade on Yemen. Last month, a military camp explosion in Aden killed 12 soldiers and injured others.
Yemen has been embroiled in conflict since the Houthis took over the capital in 2014, leading to a Saudi-led coalition intervention in support of the government. Despite a UN-mediated truce that expired after six months, both sides have mostly adhered to a “de facto ceasefire,” with occasional clashes in contested regions.
