The death toll in the Anandapur warehouse fire on the outskirts of Kolkata has reached 27, with 25 individuals still unaccounted for. Two more bodies were found in the charred warehouses, bringing the total fatalities to 27. Authorities have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) a week after the incident, prompting questions about the delayed response.
The fire, which started at the Pushpanjali decorator’s warehouse and Wow Momo factory on January 26, proved challenging to control despite 32 hours of firefighting efforts. The SIT, led by Baruipur District Police SP Shubhendu Kumar, aims to investigate the incident thoroughly. The team will focus on forensic reports, DNA testing of the deceased, and identifying any irregularities at the factory.
Following the fire, arrests have been made, including the manager and deputy manager of the momo manufacturing company. Allegations have surfaced regarding the factory’s location on reclaimed wetlands. The incident has sparked a political dispute between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP, with accusations of the government protecting the real culprits behind the tragedy.
