Defence experts have expressed strong support for the Great Nicobar Project, hailing it as a transformative initiative that will enhance India’s maritime security, reduce reliance on foreign ports, and elevate the country’s role in global trade. The project, according to Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) P. K. Srivastava, signifies a forward-looking approach focused on bolstering national security and unlocking substantial trade opportunities. Srivastava emphasized that meticulous planning, expert consultations, and thorough on-ground assessments underpin large-scale government projects like the Great Nicobar initiative.
Drawing parallels with global strategic developments, Srivastava underscored the critical role of maritime chokepoints in contemporary warfare. He highlighted the advantageous position of India, particularly through the Great Nicobar Island’s proximity to the Strait of Malacca, a vital trade route akin to the Strait of Hormuz in recent geopolitical tensions. By facilitating enhanced monitoring and management of maritime activities in one of the world’s busiest trade corridors, the project is poised to fortify India’s standing in the Indo-Pacific region.
The Great Nicobar Project encompasses the development of a dual-use airport and a significant international container transshipment terminal, which experts believe could revolutionize India’s maritime transport landscape. Former Director General of the Border Roads Organisation, Rajeev Chaudhary, described the project as a strategic linchpin in the Indian Ocean, highlighting the substantial volume of global trade passing through the Strait of Malacca, including a considerable portion of China’s energy supplies. Chaudhary noted that establishing a major port facility at Great Nicobar could act as a strategic counterbalance to China’s expanding network of ports in the region.
Acknowledging environmental considerations, Chaudhary assured that the project’s implementation would adhere to established policies, including compensatory afforestation measures to mitigate tree felling. He emphasized that the requisite clearances were obtained through due process, maintaining a delicate equilibrium between development and conservation. Major General Arvind Bhatia (Retd) emphasized the importance of raising public awareness about the project to address concerns effectively and underscore its national significance. The experts called for broad-based support from stakeholders across the political spectrum to reinforce India’s strategic and economic interests.
