Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta stated that the State Assembly has requested a written explanation from Punjab Police Chief Gaurav Yadav regarding the registration of an FIR in Punjab using video footage from Delhi Assembly proceedings. The video clip in question is related to the controversy surrounding AAP leader Atishi’s alleged disrespectful comments about Sikh Gurus in the Delhi Assembly. Speaker Gupta emphasized that the Punjab FIR based on Delhi Assembly footage is considered a matter of Legislative privilege.
Addressing the media, Speaker Gupta disclosed that notices have been sent to the Punjab DGP, Jalandhar Police Commissioner, and Punjab’s Special DGP Cyber Cell, giving them 48 hours to provide written explanations and relevant documents. He criticized the alleged political motives behind Atishi’s actions and the subsequent filing of the FIR in Punjab, stressing that the misuse of the Assembly for political gain will not be tolerated. The notice to Punjab Police was issued by the Delhi Assembly Secretary Ranjeet Singh, highlighting that the House is already addressing the issue and has referred the video clip for forensic examination and to the Committee of Privileges.
Speaker Gupta expressed concern over the involvement of Punjab Police in a matter considered within the privileged domain of the House and demanded a detailed explanation along with relevant documents from the authorities. The controversy over Atishi’s remarks and the FIR against Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra in Punjab has sparked a political battle between the AAP government in Punjab and the BJP government in Delhi. Both parties have accused each other of impropriety, with the Delhi Speaker suggesting that the Punjab Police’s actions constitute a “Breach of Privilege.” He assured that severe action will be taken against anyone found involved in this conspiracy, emphasizing the seriousness and constitutional significance of the matter.
