Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra criticized the presence of prominent lawyers like MPs Kapil Sibal and Vivek Tankha in the Sonam Wangchuk case, suggesting Wangchuk’s ties to the political Opposition. Malhotra supported the Delhi Police’s decision to move Wangchuk from a protest site to a hospital, citing compliance with court orders.
The High Court’s refusal to grant interim relief in Wangchuk’s case was noted, possibly due to the circumstances surrounding his protest activities. Malhotra highlighted Wangchuk’s participation in a hunger strike organized by various political parties, questioning the motives behind the protest.
Malhotra accused Wangchuk of joining the hunger strike not for student welfare but to cause disruptions during the Monsoon Session. The BJP President’s remarks coincided with AAP leader Manish Sisodia’s visit to Wangchuk’s former protest site at Jantar Mantar. Wangchuk, on a hunger strike since June 28 over NEET-UG issues, was recently hospitalized due to health concerns.
The High Court declined to issue an interim order on a plea challenging Wangchuk’s hospitalization, emphasizing the government’s decision’s legitimacy. Justice Mini Pushkarna directed relevant parties to submit status reports within three days, with a hearing scheduled for July 24. The court acknowledged medical monitoring at Safdarjung Hospital and Wangchuk’s consent to treatment.
