Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, along with BJP legislators, protested at the Assembly premises before a special session discussing the Women’s Reservation Bill’s failure in Parliament. The protest emphasized the BJP’s call for the Women’s Reservation Act’s implementation and criticized opposition parties for not supporting it.
During the Assembly’s special sitting, Chief Minister Gupta and BJP MLAs demanded the enactment of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. The session aimed to address women’s reservation issues, with the ruling party advocating for a formal resolution supporting the constitutional amendment’s implementation. Chief Minister Gupta also objected to the opposition’s position during the session.
Rekha Gupta met with Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu before the special session, as per Raj Niwas’s official statement. The Assembly’s agenda included discussions on women’s reservation, obituary references, financial accounts, and a resolution on the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. The House was set to deliberate on the defeat of the Women’s Reservation framework bill in the Lok Sabha.
The proposed Women’s Reservation bill failed to secure the required two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha, receiving 298 votes in favor and 230 against. The Centre decided not to proceed with related votes on delimitation and Lok Sabha seat expansion after the bill’s defeat, citing interconnections between the proposals.
