A Delhi court rejected the bail pleas of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in connection to the 2020 northeast Delhi riots conspiracy case. The court cited the Supreme Court’s previous order denying them bail and stated that their fresh applications were not admissible.
The court emphasized that it was bound by the Supreme Court’s decision from January 5, 2026, which dismissed the bail petitions of Khalid and Imam. The judge mentioned that the applicants could only reapply for bail after the examination of protected witnesses by the prosecution or after one year from the Supreme Court’s order.
During the hearing, the defense argued for bail, citing changes in circumstances post the Supreme Court’s ruling. The defense referred to recent judgments and urged the court to grant bail to Khalid and Imam. However, the prosecution opposed the pleas, stating that there were no significant changes warranting reconsideration.
The case pertains to the larger conspiracy behind the northeast Delhi violence in February 2020. Khalid and Imam, along with others, face charges under the UAPA and other laws. The Supreme Court had earlier denied bail to Khalid and Imam, citing prima facie evidence supporting restrictions on bail under the UAPA.
