The national capital is currently enduring a period of intense rainfall during this monsoon season, leading to significant waterlogging in various areas and causing major traffic disruptions across the Delhi-NCR region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Delhi, warning of extremely heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, and intense showers. Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for parts of Ghaziabad, Noida, Meerut, and Gurugram, where more heavy rainfall is expected.
The heavy overnight rain has resulted in severe waterlogging and prolonged traffic congestion in several parts of Delhi-NCR. Gurugram has been particularly impacted, with waterlogged roads slowing down vehicular movement and prompting many private companies to advise their employees to work from home. According to the IMD, Mayur Vihar recorded the highest rainfall in Delhi, receiving 103 mm in the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 a.m.
In neighboring areas like Ghaziabad, Kamla Nehru Nagar saw 164 mm of rainfall, while Hindon received 134 mm. The situation was similar in Gurugram, with NorthCap University and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) recording 27 mm and 36 mm of rainfall, respectively. Various parts of Delhi, including Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, Shani Bazar Road in Sangam Vihar, Vikas Marg, and the stretch between Mayur Vihar Phase-1 Metro Station and Akshardham, experienced severe waterlogging, leading to traffic disruptions and difficulties for commuters.
Residents have expressed concerns about the challenges they face due to waterlogged streets and unsafe commuting conditions. In Ghaziabad, the Bhopura area witnessed severe waterlogging, impacting traffic on the Mohan Nagar-Wazirabad Road. Similarly, Gurugram faced widespread waterlogging, causing traffic to move slowly on the Delhi-Jaipur Highway service lane near Narsinghpur and congestion in various other areas like Basai, Umang Bhardwaj Chowk, Kadipur, and Sohna Road.
The Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory regarding the affected traffic movement on NH-24 near Ghazipur due to continuous rainfall since Wednesday. Efforts are underway by the Traffic Police and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to clear the water accumulation. Motorists traveling from Ghaziabad to Delhi have been advised to avoid NH-24 and take an alternative route until traffic conditions improve.
