Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh announced the initiation of the ‘Naya Safar Yojana’ by the Rekha Gupta government to replace old, polluting trucks and buses in the National Capital Region. This scheme, supported by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, aims to improve air quality and promote sustainable transportation in Delhi-NCR. The initiative focuses on phasing out highly polluting commercial vehicles by encouraging the adoption of cleaner BS-VI and Electric Vehicles.
The total budget for the scheme amounts to Rs 9,585 crore, with the Central Government contributing Rs 5,041 crore through the National Capital Region Planning Board. Implementation will be facilitated through a digital platform, the Naya Safar Portal, ensuring real-time eligibility verification and automated benefit distribution. The scheme, operational for two years, offers significant financial incentives to transport operators for transitioning to cleaner vehicles.
Delhi Minister emphasized that the ‘Naya Safar Yojana’ signifies a crucial move towards replacing old, polluting vehicles with environmentally friendly alternatives. By collaborating closely with the Government of India, the initiative aims to promote clean mobility, sustainability, and public health in Delhi and the NCR. The scheme, also known as ‘Naya Safar Yojana,’ combines financial incentives, tax benefits, and scrappage-linked advantages to combat vehicular pollution in the region effectively.
The Government of NCT of Delhi will provide a 100% Motor Vehicle Tax concession for new eligible vehicles and a 50% concession for used ones for a decade under this scheme. Additionally, registration fee waivers and relief from pending road tax and fitness penalties are included for qualifying vehicles. The scheme is set to benefit around 2.07 lakh private truck and bus owners in Delhi-NCR, promoting the scientific scrapping of old vehicles through Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facilities.
