The Delhi High Court has instructed the Election Commission of India to promptly review an application by former Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K. Kavitha for the registration of her proposed political party ‘Telangana Praja Jagruti’. K. Kavitha, as the President of the intended party, had filed a writ petition alleging inaction by the poll body in processing her application under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
The plea stated that ‘Telangana Praja Jagruti’ was officially established on January 19, 2026, during a duly convened general body meeting where its constitution was adopted, and office bearers were authorized to apply for registration. Subsequently, a detailed application, including all necessary documents such as the party constitution, notarized affidavits, a membership list of 151 individuals, certified meeting minutes, alternative names, and the requisite fee, was submitted to the ECI on January 23.
Despite the acknowledgment of the application by the ECI on January 27, the petition claimed that no progress had been made by the ECI in scrutinizing the application or initiating the statutory process. Emphasizing the urgency due to ongoing and upcoming local body elections in Telangana, K. Kavitha highlighted that the delay had hindered her party’s ability to participate in the electoral processes.
The Delhi High Court, after considering the arguments, directed the ECI to promptly decide on the application and closed the petition. Former BRS leader Kavitha had previously announced intentions to establish a new political party with ‘Telangana’ in its name, positioning it as a significant Opposition entity in the state. She also expressed plans to contest the upcoming Assembly elections, with Siddipet or Bodhan as potential constituencies.
