The Delhi High Court has granted Umar Khalid, a jailed student activist, three days of interim bail starting from June 1 to June 3. This decision allows Khalid to spend time with his ailing mother, who is scheduled for surgery next month. The court took an empathetic view, permitting Khalid to be in the Delhi-NCR region and visit only the hospital and his place of stay during this period.
Khalid had approached the Delhi High Court after a trial court denied him interim bail to attend his late uncle’s Chehlum ceremony and care for his mother. The court directed Khalid to maintain contact with the Investigating Officer through a single mobile number and restricted him from visiting places other than the hospital and his designated stay location.
The Additional Solicitor General representing the Delhi Police opposed Khalid’s plea, arguing that Khalid’s mother’s surgery was minor and could be managed by his sisters. The court dismissed Khalid’s earlier plea for a 15-day temporary release, emphasizing that each application for bail must be evaluated independently based on its merits.
