The Delhi High Court has issued a criminal contempt notice to social media influencer Kapil Kakar for allegedly making scandalous remarks about the judiciary in connection with the recent Saket building collapse tragedy. Kakar, a psychologist and social activist, is accused of posting objectionable videos and posts on various platforms, including YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, X, and LinkedIn, targeting a sitting High Court judge and the judiciary. The court has directed social media platforms to remove the offensive content and block the concerned handle.
The criminal contempt petition was filed by the Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA), citing Kakar’s videos that accused a sitting judge of being responsible for the deaths resulting from the building collapse. The court observed that such allegations against judges and the judiciary on social media are on the rise and expressed concerns over attempts to scandalize the institution. The Delhi High Court emphasized the importance of not giving attention to such content that undermines the judiciary.
The controversy stems from the collapse of an under-construction building near Saket Metro Station on May 31, claiming six lives and injuring several others. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, with an FIR registered for culpable homicide. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site, ordered a magisterial inquiry, and instructed strict actions against unauthorized constructions and those responsible. The court has urged the public to refrain from engaging with content that tarnishes the reputation of the judiciary.
