The Delhi High Court has taken action on a contempt petition accusing non-compliance with a previous order regarding the examination of safety concerns related to using specific diabetes drugs for weight loss. Justice Sachin Datta has asked for responses from the Drugs Controller General of India and the Union Health Secretary, granting them four weeks to respond. The case is scheduled for further hearing on May 21.
The contempt plea, filed by advocate Rohit Kumar, alleges that authorities did not adhere to the court’s directive from July 2025, which required a decision on regulatory concerns about GLP-1 receptor agonist drugs for weight management. Despite being allowed to submit additional material, the petitioner claims that no substantial action was taken for several months, even after reminders and emails.
The representation in the contempt plea raised issues such as the waiver of India-specific clinical trials, pharmacovigilance gaps, regulatory inconsistencies, and aggressive marketing practices. The petitioner argues that the lack of action for nearly eight months since the submission of the representation constitutes deliberate disobedience of the court’s directives. The petitioner emphasizes that a time-bound decision was mandated by the court, and mere internal processing without a concrete decision does not fulfill the judicial order.
