The Delhi High Court dismissed Vikas Yadav’s plea for a 21-day furlough to spend time with his wife after his recent marriage. Justice Ravinder Dudeja stated that there was no arbitrariness or violation of rights in the prison authorities’ decision to deny his request. Yadav, a convict in the Nitish Katara murder case, is serving a 25-year sentence and has spent over 23 years in custody.
Yadav had challenged the jail authorities’ decision to deny him furlough, arguing that it was arbitrary. He sought temporary release to maintain social ties, especially with his wife. However, the authorities opposed his plea, citing the seriousness of his offence and concerns about public safety. The High Court upheld the prison authorities’ decision, noting no grounds to interfere with it.
Vikas Yadav, along with his cousin Vishal Yadav, was convicted for kidnapping and killing Nitish Katara in 2002 due to his alleged relationship with their sister. The court observed that the murder was motivated by caste differences.
