Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu recently assessed a proposal for the phased restoration of Sanjay Lake in East Delhi. He emphasized the need for a consistent supply of treated water to enhance the water body and its surrounding areas. The 52-acre lake and the adjacent 165-acre protected forest are undergoing restoration efforts to create a resilient recreational space.
Efforts are underway to convert this significant blue-green asset into a durable and pristine leisure area. L-G Sandhu instructed the prompt repair of the pipeline managed by @DelhiJalBoard to ensure a continuous flow of treated water from the Dallupura Sewage Treatment Plant. Measures such as continuous de-weeding, algae removal, and reinforcing embankment slopes with geo-textile technology are already in progress to safeguard and revitalize the waterbody.
Future phases will concentrate on directing stagnant water flow, introducing bioswales for improved groundwater recharge, implementing bio-remediation actions, and installing aerators and fountains to enhance dissolved oxygen levels. Additionally, a plantation initiative involving the cultivation of 5,000 native trees aims to enrich the ecological diversity of the area. The goal is to restore Sanjay Lake to its former glory, providing a clean, vibrant, and ecologically rich public space for the people of Delhi.
L-G Sandhu also stressed the importance of activating all rainwater harvesting systems before the monsoon season. He urged officials to intensify efforts in recharging groundwater and conserving water resources. The Lieutenant Governor engaged with various civic agency officials, instructing them to swiftly repair piping, gutters, and storage tanks, with a specific focus on rainwater harvesting structures in government establishments. Assessments are being conducted to determine the total capacity of all rainwater harvesting systems across Delhi, laying the groundwork for future planning and sustainable water conservation endeavors.
