New Delhi, Aug 16 (IANS) New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) Vice Chairperson (V-C) Kuljeet Singh Chahal led a plantation drive at the Aditya Sadan NDMC Housing Complex in the national capital’s Ashoka Road, the 37th consecutive weekend of the ‘#EkPedMaaKeNaam On Sunday’ campaign.
He said that ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ connects our respect for our mothers with our responsibility towards nature.
“Every sapling planted today is a small but meaningful step towards cleaner air, a better environment and a healthier future for generations to come,” he added.
Chahal said that merely planting a sapling is not enough.
“Regular care, watering and protection are equally important to ensure that the sapling grows into a strong and healthy tree.”
He appealed to the residents to take responsibility for the saplings planted in and around their neighbourhoods and contribute to their healthy growth.
A large number of residents, resident welfare association (RWA) office-bearers, children, women, NDMC officers and employees participated enthusiastically in the programme, an official statement said.
“Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, participants planted saplings in honour of their mothers,” it said.
Chahal added that the campaign, which has continued for 37 consecutive weeks, reflects the growing awareness and participation of citizens in environmental conservation.
During the programme, local residents and RWA office-bearers also brought several civic issues concerning the area to the notice of Chahal.
These included the monkey menace, cleanliness and maintenance of the park, requirement of a lift, improvement of the gym and development of a play area for children.
Chahal directed the officials concerned to examine these issues on the ground and take time-bound action for their resolution.
He said that direct interaction with RWAs and local residents helps in understanding ground-level problems and ensures their speedy resolution.
Officers and employees from the Civil, Electrical, Health and Horticulture Departments were present during the programme.
RWA representatives, including President Hari Singh and other office bearers Manoj Girbhay, Girish Pant, Manoj Dabral, Karam Chand and Kamal Kishore, along with other members, also participated.
Children also presented poems and speeches on the importance of trees and environmental conservation.
The NDMC V-C appreciated their participation and said that developing a sense of responsibility towards nature among children is essential for creating a greener future.
He said that the campaign has now gone beyond plantation and is becoming a platform to continuously engage people in environmental conservation.
He appealed to citizens to carry forward the simple resolve of “Plant a sapling, protect it and nurture it into a tree”.
The NDMC V-C added that every tree is a valuable legacy for future generations.
“If every individual takes responsibility for even one sapling in their neighbourhood, collective efforts can make New Delhi cleaner, greener and healthier.”
