The Anti Auto Theft Squad (AATS) of Delhi Police’s Shahdara district captured a 28-year-old habitual auto thief and snatcher, seizing five stolen two-wheelers and a snatched mobile phone. The accused, with a history of 19 prior cases related to snatching, robbery, and Arms Act violations, was apprehended as part of a crackdown on increasing two-wheeler thefts in Shahdara.
A specialized team, led by Inspector Prateek Saxena, conducted the operation, aided by CCTV footage analysis, local intelligence development, and identification of habitual vehicle thieves in the area. The police, under ACP Mohinder Singh and DCP Shahdara’s supervision, intensified surveillance, gathered intelligence, and deployed undercover personnel at vulnerable spots.
The arrest took place near the Karkardooma Court red light, where the accused, Umesh alias Himanshu, was caught riding a stolen motorcycle. Further investigations led to the recovery of four additional stolen two-wheelers from various locations. Umesh confessed to his involvement in multiple vehicle thefts, leading to the retrieval of the stolen property linked to separate theft cases.
Police efforts to trace Umesh’s associate, Rashid, who allegedly provided stolen vehicles for safekeeping, are ongoing. The recovered items include two Honda Activa scooters, two Hero Splendor Plus motorcycles, a TVS Apache motorcycle, and an OPPO mobile phone. The recovery has helped resolve six criminal cases, including vehicle thefts and a mobile phone snatching incident.
Umesh, a repeat offender released on bail, resorted to theft and snatching to support his drug addiction and daily expenses. Investigations continue to recover more stolen goods and apprehend Rashid, suspected of involvement in disposing of stolen vehicles.
