The Crime Branch of Delhi Police uncovered a scheme involving the sale of expired food and cosmetic products, leading to the arrest of one individual and the confiscation of a significant quantity of items that could endanger consumer health. The accused, identified as Abdul Mannan Khan, was apprehended in southwest Delhi. Following specific intelligence received on April 8, a team from the Crime Branch’s Central Range, led by Inspector Yashendra Singh, conducted a raid near Kapashera Border where expired products were being sold at discounted rates.
During the operation, a substantial amount of expired food items and cosmetics were seized from the premises. The accused was caught on the spot as customers, including decoys, purchased and confirmed the expired nature of the goods. Officials from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India were called in to inspect the site and collect samples for testing. A case has been filed under relevant laws at the Crime Branch police station.
The accused had allegedly devised a systematic method to engage in this illicit trade, acquiring expired or damaged products at low prices and selling them to unsuspecting customers at discounted rates. The seized items encompassed various popular brands of groceries, dairy products, spices, baby food supplements, and personal care items. Nearly 900 kg of grocery items and around 2,000 kg of dairy products were confiscated and disposed of as per regulations.
Abdul Mannan Khan, with a limited education, transitioned from being a street vendor to running his own shop where he sold expired goods as new. This deceptive practice not only defrauded consumers but also posed significant health risks. The police emphasized that the investigation is ongoing to uncover further details in the case.
