Several Delhi Police personnel sustained serious injuries during a clash with miscreants at a Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led protest at Jantar Mantar. The incident occurred near Tolstoy Marg in Connaught Place when some individuals threw stones and bottles at security forces around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Despite warnings to maintain calm, the protesters continued to throw stones, leading to the use of tear gas shells by the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and police to disperse the crowd.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Vivek Bhagat from Connaught Place was among those injured in the attack. The injured officers were taken to Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital for medical treatment. Following the violent protests on July 20, where CJP supporters and students demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, security has been heightened in the affected areas to ensure law and order.
Special CP (L&O Zone-I) Devesh Chandra Srivastava visited the RML Hospital during the night to meet the injured officials. The protests, which started at Jantar Mantar, attracted students, opposition figures, and activists advocating for accountability in the education system. Delhi Police have pledged a thorough investigation into the violence to address the situation and prevent further unrest.
Security measures have been increased across the national capital to curb any potential escalation. In response, 16 Delhi Metro stations, including Lok Kalyan Marg, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, and Central Secretariat, were shut down on Thursday as a precautionary measure. Despite the closures, interchange facilities at Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, and Central Secretariat will remain operational for commuters needing to change trains.
