Demands for the immediate expulsion of Jahangir Khan, the Trinamool Congress candidate for the Falta Assembly constituency, arose during an internal meeting of the party’s newly elected legislators. Chaired by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the meeting also saw the presence of the party’s general secretary and Lok Sabha member, Abhishek Banerjee.
The call for Khan’s expulsion emerged following his announcement of withdrawal from the re-polling contest on Thursday. At a press conference, Khan expressed gratitude to the new Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, for announcing a special package for Falta. However, Khan did not specify if the decision was influenced by party leadership.
During the meeting, three party legislators, Kunal Ghosh, Sandipan Saha, and Ritabrata Banerjee, demanded Khan’s immediate expulsion. They also advocated for a more open environment within the party to address internal grievances and discuss party operations.
The Trinamool Congress, which secured 80 seats in the recent West Bengal Assembly polls, convened the meeting for all newly elected legislators. However, 15 legislators were notably absent, signaling potential discontent within the party ranks against the leadership. Criticism of the party leadership has been mounting post the electoral defeat, with party legislators now voicing their concerns.
