Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi unveiled development projects worth Rs 509.23 crore in Bhavnagar, including the introduction of electric buses under the PM e-Bus Sewa scheme. The Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation initiated 35 projects worth Rs 140.83 crore and inaugurated a project valued at Rs 368.40 crore to enhance civic infrastructure and public amenities in the city. The aim is to bolster the urban transport system’s efficiency and sustainability with the allocation of 50 electric buses.
The modern Adhewada depot has been completed for the operation and maintenance of the buses, making Bhavnagar the first city in Gujarat to launch electric bus services under the scheme’s second phase. These buses are expected to significantly benefit commuters, especially during the summer months, offering air-conditioned services. Sanghavi expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on behalf of the city’s residents and highlighted the positive impact of the recently announced agricultural relief package and trade agreements on various industries.
The new bus service is set to enhance daily travel convenience for citizens and improve connectivity between urban and rural areas. It is anticipated to bring about a positive change in people’s lives through an organized public transport system. The operation and maintenance of the 50 buses will cost approximately Rs 350 crore over 12 years, with the Centre providing a grant of Rs 103 crore during this period. The service will cover 17 routes, including both urban and suburban areas, benefitting around 3,000 passengers daily.
Minister of State for Energy, Kaushik Vekariya, highlighted that the eco-friendly initiative will help reduce pollution and enhance air quality in Bhavnagar. The service will initially operate on eight routes with 50 buses, offering affordable fares starting at Rs 10 for travel up to five kilometers. The project is expected to have a significant impact on the city’s transportation system and overall environmental sustainability.
