Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya criticized the Samajwadi Party (SP) amidst the controversy surrounding the alleged illegal trade of codeine-based cough syrup in Uttar Pradesh. Maurya mentioned that the SP’s influence has weakened, and he predicted a bleak electoral future for the party. The SP has been vocal about deaths linked to the consumption of the cough syrup, causing concern in various districts of Uttar Pradesh and neighboring regions.
Accusing the BJP-led government of inaction, SP MLA Kamal Akhtar demanded a thorough investigation into the matter. He emphasized that it is the government’s responsibility to address such serious issues promptly. The controversy escalated when SP chief Akhilesh Yadav made serious allegations during a press conference, implicating a large illegal cough syrup racket in the state. Yadav raised concerns about high-level involvement and governance under the BJP.
Yadav highlighted the magnitude of the alleged scam, suggesting it involved numerous companies and significant financial transactions. He called for stringent action against all individuals involved, irrespective of their political affiliations. In response, the BJP criticized the opposition for politicizing the issue.
