Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced that the replacement of 33 crest gates at the Tungabhadra Dam is almost finished. The inauguration is scheduled for May 15, with the installation work already at its final stages. The Deputy CM highlighted the significance of this project in safeguarding the livelihoods of 7.50 lakh farmers.
Shivakumar expressed satisfaction with the progress, emphasizing that the new gates will secure the water needs of farmers for the next 50 years. He mentioned the allocation of Rs 300 crore for enhancing safety measures in other projects and assured that the gates’ functionality is guaranteed. The project has been undertaken with a focus on long-term benefits and minimal interference in dam administration.
The Deputy CM addressed concerns about silt removal and the dam’s height, stating that the current focus is on optimizing water usage within the existing system. He also touched upon pending administrative files, pollution reports related to dam water, and the need for further discussions on water management strategies. Shivakumar reiterated the government’s commitment to resolving pending issues promptly and ensuring the dam’s safety and efficiency.
