Digital Investors in India Hold Rs 10 Lakh on Average, Report Reveals

An average digital investor in India maintains nearly Rs 10 lakh in their portfolio and adds about Rs 3 lakh annually. However, around 80% of investable digital wealth is concentrated in SIPs, direct equities, and lump-sum mutual funds, according to a report by Redseer. SIPs represent 37% of holdings, while direct equities account for 32%, indicating a lag in product exploration compared to asset accumulation.

The report highlights that the future growth trajectory will be more influenced by investor behavior than acquisition. Despite considerable awareness, the adoption of products like ETFs, global equities, margin trading facilities, and loans against securities remains limited. Redseer identified three investor groups shaping the market: guided savers, aspiring investors, and confident builders, each with distinct investment approaches.

Mrigank Gutgutia, Partner at Redseer Strategy Consultants, emphasized the challenge for platforms to assist investors in navigating a broader investment landscape and engaging more confidently. Platforms that simplify decision-making, present timely opportunities, and establish trust are poised to gain a larger share of assets under management over time.

The evolution of digital investing in India hinges on platforms that can elevate passive participation to deeper financial engagement. Despite strong competition, one platform dominates half of active platform usage, with most investors showing loyalty even in the absence of zero brokerage incentives. Pricing is now considered a basic requirement rather than a key differentiator, with investors valuing user-friendly interfaces, reliable execution, portfolio visibility, and brand trust. Leading platforms excel in these areas compared to industry averages.
