Veteran Congress leader Digvijaya Singh emphasized that merely enforcing a strict law against exam paper leaks would not address the country’s examination challenges. He urged for a comprehensive dialogue on the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Singh’s comments followed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of a task force, led by Nandan Nilekani, to enhance the exam system’s integrity through technology-driven solutions.

Singh’s office expressed that focusing solely on tightening paper leak regulations would not be sufficient to tackle the issue at hand. They proposed a thorough parliamentary discussion on the NEP 2020 and emphasized the importance of consulting with education ministers from all states beforehand. Singh stressed the need for decentralization in a diverse country like India, advocating for education to remain under the State List of the Indian Constitution.

PM Modi disclosed that the expert panel, under Nilekani’s leadership, would suggest reforms to modernize the examination system and enhance transparency. The committee, comprising eminent figures like S. Somnath and Anita Karwal, aims to revamp the assessment process. Additionally, the government plans to introduce a stringent anti-paper leak legislation in Parliament to combat exam malpractices effectively.

The recent developments come in the wake of the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy, sparking debates on the efficacy of the current examination framework.
