Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh expressed readiness to present his case before the Supreme Court following a request for contempt proceedings by Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava. Singh acknowledged Bhargava’s move to seek consent for initiating criminal contempt proceedings against him and saw it as an opportunity to clarify the circumstances surrounding his remarks.
The dispute stemmed from the Rajya Sabha election in Madhya Pradesh, where the rejection of Congress candidate Minakshi Natarajan’s nomination papers led to protests and legal challenges. Despite efforts by the opposition party, the candidate’s election proceeded, leading to strong reactions from Congress leaders.
Singh’s comments during a media interaction, where he questioned the handling of a related petition, drew criticism from the BJP and triggered Bhargava’s call for legal action. Bhargava, a former Additional Advocate General, argued that Singh’s remarks were a deliberate affront to the Supreme Court’s dignity and credibility.
Singh defended his right to express opinions through constitutional and judicial means, emphasizing the importance of presenting one’s case. He expressed confidence that the truth would prevail and reaffirmed his commitment to upholding democratic values and respecting institutions throughout his political career.
