Veteran Congress leader Digvijaya Singh has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding parents’ concerns over the sudden enforcement of the three-language policy for CBSE Class 9 students. Singh forwarded a representation from parents objecting to the immediate rollout of the policy during the ongoing academic session. The concerns raised by parents highlight the lack of adequate teachers, textbooks, and transition time for the implementation.
Singh emphasized the need for the government’s intervention, citing potential disruptions similar to past chaotic situations. He pointed out an inconsistency between the CBSE’s recent directive on the third language requirement and its earlier decisions. Despite the CBSE Governing Body’s approval to continue with the existing Scheme of Studies until the release of graded textbooks by NCERT, a circular was issued for the implementation of the third language instruction.
Questioning the rationale behind the sudden change, Singh expressed concerns about the impact on schools across the country. He highlighted challenges in regions where Hindi is not widely spoken, especially for students in southern and northeastern states. Singh also raised issues regarding the availability of qualified Sanskrit teachers and appropriate textbooks for promoting the language.
Singh urged PM Modi to defer the policy’s implementation for current Class IX students until adequate preparations are made. He emphasized the importance of sound policy decisions for the academic futures of millions of students and called for immediate relief. Singh also mentioned ongoing legal proceedings related to the issue, expressing hope for urgent consideration to ensure well-prepared policy decisions.
