The ruling DMK party in Tamil Nadu has officially agreed on a seat-sharing arrangement with the KMDK party for the upcoming state elections. The pact grants two constituencies to the KMDK, with candidates contesting under the DMK’s symbol.
The agreement was signed at the DMK headquarters in the presence of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and KMDK general secretary E.R. Eswaran. Following the conclusion of the seat-sharing discussions, Stalin left the headquarters.
Amid tensions with its key ally, the Congress, the DMK is firm on contesting a significant number of seats independently to secure a majority in the 234-member assembly. The Congress has pushed for a larger share of seats, but negotiations have stalled over the allocation.
The disagreement has escalated as the Congress seeks a role in the state cabinet, emphasizing the importance of power-sharing in a coalition government. However, the DMK remains steadfast in its stance of single-party rule, resisting pressure to include allies in ministerial positions.
In the previous 2021 elections, the DMK emerged victorious, securing a majority on its own while the Congress won 18 seats out of the 25 it contested, highlighting the dynamics of their alliance.
