The DMK has received a significant strategic advantage with the addition of R. Vaithilingam, a seasoned leader from the politically crucial delta region and a former close associate of O. Panneerselvam. Vaithilingam’s entry brings experience, organizational depth, and caste balance to the party, enhancing its preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections.
Vaithilingam, known for his bold and decisive leadership, emerged as a prominent figure during the tenure of late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. His strong grassroots support and reputation as a mass leader were evident as he oversaw operations in around 25 Assembly segments in the delta region, securing a notable victory in the 2021 elections despite the DMK’s statewide success.
Considered a leader with a strong voter base and independent influence, Vaithilingam’s switch to the DMK is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening the party’s foothold in the delta area. His presence is particularly significant due to the party’s need for experienced leaders, especially from the Kallar community, to which he belongs, in certain regions where such leadership is lacking.
Party insiders suggest that Vaithilingam is likely to be appointed as the district secretary for the Orathanadu-Peravurani-Pattukkottai region in Thanjavur district, a stronghold of the Kallar community. This move is anticipated to reinforce his political sway across the delta and provide the DMK with a seasoned strategist to guide its campaign efforts in one of Tamil Nadu’s crucial electoral zones.
