Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi criticized the government’s defense of three proposed legislations, including the women’s reservation bill in Parliament. She accused the government of using the cause to safeguard its own political future by redrawing the electoral map of the country. Questioning the timing and motive behind the special session of Parliament, Kanimozhi raised concerns about the government’s approach.
She highlighted the delay in implementing women’s reservation despite Parliament’s unanimous approval in 2023. Kanimozhi criticized the government for linking delimitation with reservation and using the 2011 Census data for its political advantage. She emphasized that the government’s actions seem more like a political strategy than genuine electoral reform.
Kanimozhi expressed skepticism towards the government’s assurances on maintaining the status quo on the Southern state’s Lok Sabha representation. She criticized the government for what she perceived as a lack of sincerity towards women’s cause. The DMK leader called for delinking reservation from delimitation and questioned the government’s commitment to women’s rights.
Pointing out the government’s track record of unfulfilled assurances, Kanimozhi demanded that assurances regarding delimitation not affecting state representation be included in the legislation. She emphasized the importance of safeguarding women’s rights and standing up to the government’s decisions that may impact these rights.
