Stung by its defeat in the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly election, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is gearing up for a significant organizational revamp to rejuvenate the party and enhance its grassroots network for future electoral challenges. The party is contemplating increasing the number of district secretaries from 78 to over 100 based on recommendations from the party’s election review committee. This restructuring initiative aims to address the party’s electoral setbacks and streamline its operations for better political mobilization.
As part of a comprehensive review process, the 38-member committee, formed post-election defeat, has been conducting extensive consultations with party members, former candidates, and grassroots workers across Tamil Nadu. The committee is expected to present its final report to the party leadership on June 10 after completing a thorough assessment of the state. The consultations have revealed concerns such as unresolved factional disputes, weak coordination mechanisms, and organizational deficiencies that impacted campaign efficiency.
During the discussions, party members highlighted the need for improved cooperation among alliance partners, suggesting that the DMK should consider contesting upcoming local body elections independently. There were also calls for promoting younger leaders and providing them with more opportunities in both organizational roles and electoral politics. One key proposal being considered is the reorganization of district units to reduce the workload of district secretaries, potentially leading to the creation of new districts and an increase in the total number of district secretaries to over 100.
The review committee, comprising mostly younger leaders and youth wing functionaries, signifies the party’s focus on generational change. The upcoming report is anticipated to pave the way for a significant organizational overhaul by the DMK, aiming to address internal challenges and prepare for future electoral battles.
